The decision is based in particular on future EU regulations, which will introduce new data security requirements for devices connected to a network.

Starting from 1 August 2025, wireless devices placed on the EU market must meet the new information security requirements harmonised at EU level. Device manufacturers must take into account the new requirements already in the design phase of the devices.

The Cybersecurity Label lets consumers know that the labelled devices and applications meet basic information security standards. Traficom awards the label to applications and connected smart devices that meet the certification criteria.

The cybersecurity authorities of Finland and Singapore are the first authorities in the world to agree on the mutual recognition of cybersecurity labels issued by each other and the related procedures.

According to a consumer survey commissioned by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom, consumers are increasingly aware of the risks related to smart devices every year. In 2019, Traficom launched the Cybersecurity Label that helps consumers make better choices in terms of information security when purchasing smart devices.

At the end of 2019, Finland introduced the Cybersecurity Label, a voluntary label awarded to secure smart devices. Voluntary and mandatory requirements for smart devices are currently also discussed at EU level.
